May 10, 2018

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Three Western Washington University softball players have been recognized for their accomplishments in the classroom as members of the 2018 Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, announced Tuesday by the conference office.

WWU’s three selections to the team are sophomore pitcher Anna Kasner (Milton, WA/Fife), sophomore outfielder Kylisa Hull (Redmond, WA/Lake Washington) and junior pitcher Morgan VanRiper (Kalama, WA).

Kasner was earned the academic honor in her first year of eligibility, maintaining a 3.31 GPA while pursuing a degree in public relations. On the field she had her sophomore campaign cut short by a back injury, not appearing in a game in the final month of the season. Despite missing substantial time, Kasner still tied for 3rd in the conference with 102 strikeouts. Overall she went 6-9 with a 3.41 ERA (43 ER, 88.1 IP) and recorded 2 shutouts and 10 complete games.

Hull appeared in 32 games, making 19 starts in the outfield (RF – 11, LF – 8). She finished the season batting .103 (3-for-29) with 2 runs scored. Hull carries a team-high 3.70 GPA while she pursues a degree in secondary education (math).

VanRiper completed her last season with the Vikings going 0-1 with a 7.93 ERA (17 ER, 15.0 IP) in 6 pitching appearances. She will be graduating early with a degree in biology (3.33 GPA). VanRiper was also selected to the 2017 GNAC All-Academic Team.

To be eligible for the GNAC All-Academic Teams, student-athletes must be of sophomore standing or higher, be in their second season of competition at their current institution and be at or above a 3.20 cumulative GPA.
