Hatchett pitches Ferndale past Bellingham

April 2, 2018

Down a few players during Spring break, Ferndale got a strong performance out of pitcher Geirean Hatch in a 4-2 victory over Bellingham Monday afternoon at Joe Martin Field.

The sophomore went 6 innings giving up just 1 hit and 1 unearned run, while striking out 8 as the Golden Eagles won their second straight game. Relief pitcher Darius Walker survived a bases loaded scare in the seventh to pick up the save.

Ferndale skipper Donny Hennigs liked what he saw out of the lefty Hatchett. "He's a power guy and when he's in the strike zone he's tough to hit."

Ferndale jumped on Bellingham early with 2 runs in the first as Kobe Sandstrom's RBI double got them on the board. Greg Roberts would drive in Sandsrom with a single in the next at-bat. Michael Bernard's triple in the 2nd and Ethan Strom's walk in the 7th would also turn into runs for the Golden Eagles.

Bellingham's runs came on an error in the 6th and a save fly in the 7th. The Red Raiders loaded the bases with one out in the final frame before Walker induced two fly-ball outs to left field to end the game.

Hennigs liked the way his team started the ballgame, especially while missing starters James Hinson and Reid Benson during the school break.

"We're a little undermanned right now, so we got some guys getting some innings that normally don't get varsity innings," said Hennigs. "We knew we had to get out early. and I like the way we did that."

Ferndale improves to 5-and-5 overall with a 3-and-1 Northwest Conference mark. The Golden Eagles host Mount Baker Tuesday, April 3rd.

Bellingham drops to 1-and-8 on the season including a 1-and-3 record in the NWC. The Red Raiders play at Burlington April 3rd.
