Three WCC Basketball Players named All-Region

Three Whatcom County Community College basketball players have been named All Region by the Northwest Athletic Conference. The awards were announced Tuesday. For the men, swingman Alex Martin made the first-team in the Northern Region, while forward Trazil Lane made the second-team. On the women's side Center Elissa Vreugdenhil was named to the second team. 

Martin, a sophomore out of Meridian High School, finished third in the conference in scoring at 22.3 points per game. Lane, the former star at Lummi Nation High School, averaged 18 points per game as a freshman for the Orcas (13-18; 6-8 NWAC)  

In her freshman campaign, Vreugdenhil averaged a double-double of 13.6 and 10.9 rebounds per game for Whatcom (7-18 overall; 2-10 NWAC). 

Everett Community College took the top honors in the Northern Region. Sophomore Gio Jackson was named Most Valuable Player, while Mike Trainman was named Coach of the Year. 

The women's Most Valuable Player in the Northern Region was Brenda Akoto, from Bellevue. Her coach Mel Stubblefield took Coach of the Year honors.
