Pair of Vikings Earn All-West Region Honors

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University senior Nick Sparling and freshman Jordan Lee were selected to the Division II PING All-West Region team announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Sparling and Lee join an elite group of Vikings that have been selected to the All-West Region team by the GCAA dating back to 2005, with the senior trio of Chris Hatch, Brett Johnson and Jeffrey Marcum last earning All-Region honors in 2016-17.
Lee (Tacoma, WA/Bellarmine Prep) led WWU with a season scoring average of 72.28 (+0.47 to par), turning in 16 rounds of par or better and recording a tournament win at the Concordia Invitational. Lee was selected as the GNAC Player and Freshman of the Year, leading the conference in scoring average and tying for 2nd place at the GNAC Championships. His season scoring average established a program freshman record and is 3rd-best in program history (relative to par) trailing only former All-American Jake Koppenberg.
Sparling (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman/Ohio State) played in all 11 tournaments and 32 rounds for the Vikings in 2018-19, ranking 3rdon the team with a scoring average of 72.56 (+0.75 to par). Sparling led the Vikings with 17 rounds of par or better and had five top-10 finishes to earn First Team All-GNAC honors. He was the highest placing WWU player at the NCAA II Regional Championships, finishing in a tie for 38th place. Sparling’s senior season scoring average enters the WWU record book as 8th-best in program history.
The Vikings put together another successful season in 2018-19, winning six of 11 tournaments and claimed the program’s ninth GNAC Championships title. WWU qualified as the No. 2 West Region seed for the NCAA Division II Championships, but placed 16thin the 20-team field to close out the season. WWU was ranked in the top five in the nation consistently throughout the season.
