WWU's Jasinsky & Stephens Honored by GNAC

TREVOR JASINSKY NAMED GNAC MEN’S BASKETBALL

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University junior forward Trevor Jasinsky has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

 

The 6-7 forward out of Camas High School scored 55 points in WWU’s opening two games of the 2018-19 season.

 

Jasinsky scored a career-high 32 points in the season-opening 84-78 victory over Cal State East Bay, shooting 8-for-15 from the field (3-7 3FG) and was 13-for-13 from the free throw line. He scored 10 of the Vikings final 12 points in the 6-point victory.

 

He backed that performance up with a 23-point, 5-rebound, 8-assist effort in a 97-92 loss at nationally-ranked UC San Diego. In the game vs. the No 24 Tritons Jasinsky was 7-for-14 from the field, including 5-for-10 from 3-point range to tie his career-high for made 3-pointers.

 

Overall in the two games Jasinsky averaged 27.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.5 blocks per game, while playing 75 of 80 minutes. He was selected to the five-player CCAA/GNAC Challenge All-Tournament Team.

 

The Vikings (1-1) return to action this weekend with a pair of games in the SFU Showdown hosted by Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC. WWU plays Minnesota State Moorhead on Friday and Humboldt State on Saturday, with both games starting at 5 pm. GNAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HISTORY

Jasinsky earned his first GNAC Player of the Week award, the 54th all-time selection for WWU since the conference started in 2001-02…Jasinsky is the 25th different WWU player to earn the GNAC Player of the Week award. 

 

GNAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

WWU will serve as the host for the 2019 GNAC Championships, with the top six teams in both the men’s and women’s conference standings at the end of the season qualifying for the tournament that will be held March 7-9 on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

AUBREY STEPHENS NAMED GNAC DEFENSIVE

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University senior libero Aubrey Stephens has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, for games played Nov. 5-11.

 

Stephens (Colville, WA) led the Vikings’ defense with 43 digs as WWU completed a 20-0 undefeated run through conference play. She finished with 15 digs in Thursday’s three-set sweep of Saint Martin’s on Thursday and then finished with 28 digs and two assists in Saturday’s five-set win over Seattle Pacific. In the two matches combined she averaged 5.38 digs per set.

 

“This is so exciting for Aubrey,” said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. “She has been steady for us all year long, and often gets overlooked because she makes it look so simple. I’m so proud of her.”

 

In her senior season Stephens has anchored the Vikings defense with a team-best 4.96 digs per set average. She ranks 4th in the GNAC and 6th in the West Region in digs per set while recording double-digits in digs in 27 of 28 matches this season.

 

For her career, the two-year starter is 10th in program history with 1,212 career digs and listed 4th averaging 4.77 digs per set. She is closing in on the top 30 in GNAC history in career digs and is 14th in conference history in digs per set.

 

GNAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK IN 2018

The GNAC Player of the Week selection was the second in Stephens’ career, also winning the defensive award Nov. 6-12, 2017. This is the ninth GNAC Player of the Week selection for the Vikings this season (79th all-time), tying the program record set last season.

The Vikings are the No. 1 seed in the West Region and will host the eight-team West Regional in the 2018 NCAA Division II Volleyball Championships starting this Thursday in Carver Gym. WWU will play No. 8 seed Cal State East Bay in the 7:30 pm match Thursday evening in Carver Gym, the final of four matches on Thursday. Two semifinal matches will be held on Friday (5 & 7:30 pm) and the West Regional Championship will be played Saturday night at 7 pm. ABOUT THE VIKINGS

The Vikings (25-3) head into their seventh consecutive NCAA Division II Championship, and 13th appearance in program history, with a 25-match winning streak. After opening the season 0-3 with all three losses to ranked opponents, WWU has recorded 25 consecutive wins to set the program record for the third-longest active winning streak in NCAA II behind Spring Hill (28) and Wheeling Jesuit (26).
