JORDAN LEE NAMED GNAC MEN’S GOLFER OF THE WEEK

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University freshman Jordan Lee has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week.

Lee (Tacoma, WA/Bellarmine Prep) earned the weekly honor after winning the Concordia Invitational last week, finishing the 54-hole tournament at 8-under-par 205. Lee fired rounds of 67 (-4), 66 (-5) and 72 (+1) on the par 71 Columbia Edgewater Country Club to record an 8-stroke victory over second-place Jaxson Daskalos of Concordia. Lee led the tournament field with 17 birdies.

In his first three collegiate tournaments, Lee has helped guide the No. 14 nationally-ranked Vikings to three consecutive tournament victories. He ranks second in the GNAC behind teammate Cody Roth with a season scoring average of 71.78 (+0.11 to par) and has turned seven rounds or par or better (out of 9).

WWU has had three of the four GNAC Golfer of the Week selections this fall, with Roth winning the award in back-to-back weeks Sept. 17-23 and Sept. 24-30.

The Vikings are currently competing in the Dixie State Trailblazer/Holiday Inn Fall Regional Preview at The Ledges Golf Club in St. George, Utah.

BRETTE BOESEL NAMED GNAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University senior setter Brette Boesel has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week.

Boesel (Brewster, WA) is the offensive selection for the week of Oct. 8-14 after helping lead the Vikings to a pair of 3-0 sweeps over Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene. Simon Fraser junior libero Katerina Dolgiukh earned defensive player of the week honors.

In the matches vs. CWU and NNU at home last week, Boesel recorded 83 assists to average 13.83 assists per set. Her ball distribution while running the offense led to four players averaging at least 2.50 kills per set and team hitting percentage of .349.

“We had a total team effort last week, and it all started with our setter, Brette Boesel,” said WWU 19th-year head coach Diane Flick-Williams. “She distributed the ball efficiently putting our hitters in the best position to succeed, and that led to a great team hitting percentage. She is our quarterback and when things are running smoothly like they have, you hardly notice, and that’s the sign of a great performance. A very well-deserved honor for Brette.”

The Vikings are in the midst of a 17-match winning streak heading into this week’s action with a 17-3 overall record and a perfect 12-0 mark in the GNAC.

Boesel ranks 2nd in the GNAC averaging 11.90 assists per set, but leads the conference with a 12.68 average in GNAC matches. The 2017 First Team All-GNAC and All-West Region selection also ranks in the top 10 nationally for assists per set.

In her four-year career at WWU, Boesel has played in all 115 matches and ranks 3rd in WWU history and 9th in GNAC history with 3,762 career assists. She is also listed in WWU’s all-time record book in service aces (19th, 103), digs (20th, 855), sets played (T5th, 407) and matches played (T14th, 115)

The GNAC Player of the Week award is the first for Boesel in her four-year career. She becomes the third WWU player to earn GNAC Volleyball Player of the Week honors this season, with teammates Abby Phelps (2 times), Kayleigh Harper (3 times) and Boesel combining for six player of the week selections.

The Vikings (17-3 overall, 12-0 GNAC) take their 17-match winning streak to the road this week, making the annual trek North to Alaska to face Alaska Anchorage on Thursday (7 pm AKT/8 pm PT) and Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday (1 pm AKT/2 pm PT). Both matches can be viewed online via GNAC.tv with live statistical updates.
