Hinson leads Ferndale past Lynden Christian

April 24, 2018

Facing a must win situation, the Ferndale baseball squad leaned on James Hinson and the senior delivered on the mound and at the plate Tuesday. The Golden Eagles rolled past the Lynden Christian Lyncs 6-to-2.

Hinson rode his fastball to a complete game victory allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits, while ringing up 8 strikeouts. He helped his own cause going 2-for three at the plate with a 2-run homerun in the 1st inning.

Hinson told The Doug Lange Network he felt good on the mound. "The warm weather helped out a little bit I believe," said Hinson. "Fastball was working good, I was able to locate it and my spinner was working as well."

Fellow senior Reid Benson also went deep with a solo shot homerun to lead off the 5th inning for Ferndale.

With the victory Ferndale improves to 9-and-9 overall and 7-and-5 in the Northwest Conference. With one regular season game left to play and in 7th place in the NWC, the Golden Eagles are in a battle to qualify for the 3A district playoffs. By league agreement Ferndale and Squalicum must by win 50% or more of their conference games and place 6th or higher in the league.

As important as the game was, Ferndale head coach Donny Hennings said he liked the focus shown by his squad. "Today we were right on the line of perfect of having fun and being business like," said Hennigs. "It starts with the two seniors doing what they did today, both hitting homers. James being on the mound...that's pretty pretty special when that happens, when you're getting to the end of a senior year."

Lynden Christian (11-7/6-6 NWC) struggled for most of the game, registering just 3 hits off Hinson in the first 6 innings. Tanner Jansen suffers the loss on the mound going 4 & 1/3 innings, giving up all 6 runs on 9 hits. The right-hander struck out 4 batters in the loss.

With the Lyncs loss, Meridian claims the 1A top-seed out of the NWC despite falling 9-0 to Anacortes Tuesday.

Ferndale wraps up the regular season Thursday versus Sehome at Joe Martin Field. Lynden Christian hosts Mt. Baker on Thursday.
