Viking Men Earn GNAC Track Team of the Week Award

February 19, 2019

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Fresh off winning the team title at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships over the weekend, the Western Washington University Men’s Track & Field program has been recognized as the GNAC co-Team of the Week.

Led by four individual titles and an overall team performance that scored points in all 17 events during the two-day championships at Jacksons Track at the Idaho Center in Nampa, Idaho.

The Vikings scored 138.5 points, well ahead of second-place Alaska Anchorage (114.5 points) for the fifth team title in program history. WWU won back-to-back championships in 2005 and 2006 and again in 2013 and 2014.

The dominating performance was led by individual victories by senior Kyler Sager in the 800 meters, junior Cordell Cummings in the 60-meter hurdles, senior J.T. Konrad in the pole vault and freshman Seren Dances in the long jump. The Vikings also had six men earn All-GNAC honors for finishing in the top three in their event.

"It was an all-around great team effort during the championships," said head coach Pee Wee Halsell. "If they weren't competing they were cheering and they all fed off each other's performances. We had a number of student-athletes step up with great performances to score in all 17 events and I couldn't be prouder of how they competed this week."

In addition to the great performance by the men’s squad, the women’s squad also had a great week in Idaho placing 4th in a competitive team competition. Five women’s team members earned All-GNAC honors, with junior Maddie Taylor winning the high jump and senior Anna Paradee recording her second indoor title in the pole vault.

This is the fifth GNAC Team of the Week award for WWU in 2018-19, joining men’s golf (Sept. 17-23), women’s soccer (Oct. 22-28) and volleyball (Nov. 12-18 & Nov. 26-Dec. 2).
