WWU's Cody Roth Named GNAC Men's Golfer of the Week

April 9, 2018

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University junior Cody Roth has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office.

Roth (Bellingham, WA) tied for 6th place during last week’s Mustang Intercollegiate hosted by Western New Mexico at Palm Valley Golf Club, leading the Vikings to a tie for 3rd in the 20-team field.

He shot three consecutive under-par rounds with scores of 68 (-4), 69 (-3) and 70 (-2) for a 207 (-9) at the 54-hole tournament as the highest-placing GNAC player in the field, just ahead of teammate Brody Bonfilio (Fr., Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) who tied for 8th (208, -8). It was the 4th top-20 finish of the year for Roth.

The -9 relative to par 54-hole score by Roth is tied for 11th-best in program history (since 1993-94). His effort helped WWU to a team score of 11-under-par 277 during Tuesday’s final round, tied for the 12th-lowest score as well as tied for the 7th-lowest score vs. par in the WWU record book. The team shot 19-under-par 845 for the tournament, which ranks in a tie for the 5th-lowest 54-hole total and tied for the 3rd-lowest score relative to par in the record book.

WWU was named the GNAC/Red Lion Team of the Week on Tuesday for its effort at the Mustang Intercollegiate. Roth is the fourth Viking to earn a GNAC Golfer of the Week honor in 2018, joining sophomore Ethan Casto (Snohomish, WA), Bonfilio and junior Michael Butler (Sammamish, WA/Skyline). The Vikings have earned four of the last six conference weekly honors with Casto (Feb. 26-March 4), Bonfilio (March 12-18) and Butler (March 26-April 1) each recognized recently.

WWU is ranked No. 8 in the first NCAA Division II West Region rankings, released April 6. The Vikings placed 16th at the NCAA Championships last season after advancing to the NCAA II West/South Central Super Regional for the 19th consecutive season where they tied for 3rd after entering the tournament as the No. 6 seed.

The Mustang Intercollegiate marked the final regular-season tournament of 2017-18 for WWU, with the GNAC Championships coming up on April 23-24 at Coeur d’Alene Resort in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. WWU is the two-time defending champion of the conference tournament and has won 8 of the last 10 titles since the event started in 2008.
