Stetson Sends Two to Bellingham Bells

March 5, 2019

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Bellingham Bells have added two players from Stetson University to their 2019 roster. Sophomore catcher Danny Martin and freshman right-handed pitcher Danny Garcia will both travel from Central Florida to debut as Bells this summer.

“We are thrilled to begin a new relationship with Stetson,” general manager Stephanie Morrell said. “We have known Coach Trimper since his time with the Maine Black Bears and are confident his Stetson players will be great additions to the Bells roster."

Martin, who played in seven games as a freshman for the Hatters, has appeared in one game so far this season going 1-for-2 at the plate.

The Miami native played for the Saugerties Stallions of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League last summer, hitting .268 with a double and three RBIs in 18 games.

“Martin is a player who we expect to really contribute a lot to the Bells,” Morrell said. “He’s consistent offensively, and also adds a lot defensively behind the plate. His ability to call a solid game and to keep baserunners honest is a great addition to this roster and we look forward to seeing Danny Martin in action!”

Martin prepped at Columbus High School in Miami where he captained the team to a No. 5 national ranking during his senior year. He was impressive behind the plate, guiding the Explorers’ pitching staff to a 0.99 ERA, while throwing out 88 percent of base stealers. He also hit .307 with 17 RBIs, and was named a South Miami-Dade All-Star, as well as All-County.

Garcia, who is from Pembroke Pines, Fla., has appeared in three games to kick off his freshman season at Stetson. He has given up one hit in 1.2 innings, while striking out one.

“Danny Garcia is an exciting young player who had a very impressive prep career,” Morrell said. “We expect that with a season of collegiate baseball under his belt, he will come to Bellingham ready to jump in and contribute to our pitching staff in a big way.  We are looking forward to having Danny as a Bell!”

Garcia was a three-year letter winner at West Broward High School where he was an All-Broward County first team selection, as well as Miami Herald first team all-area. He went 6-4 with a 1.56 ERA, and struck out 49 batters in 54 innings. A two-way star, Garcia also hit .371 with 13 RBI.

Martin and Garcia will debut as Bells on June 4 against the Kelowna Falcons at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham.
