Anderson's Late Goal leads Lynden past Blaine in District Playoff Opener

May 3, 2018

Sophomore Austin Anderson's late goal completed a second-half comeback as the Lynden Lions beat Blaine 2-1 in district playoff soccer action Thursday at Civic Stadium . The win sends the Lions (9-4-4) on to the double elimination round of the 2A district tournament. The season comes to an end for the Borderites with a record of 7-7-3.

"We didn't have the greatest first half and then the second half they decided they wanted to play," said Lynden head coach Drew Smiley. "So I kind of let them do their own thing and they came out and had a fiery second half, which was great. "

Carlos Cartagena started Lynden's comeback. The sophomore forward scored midway through the second-half during a scramble in the box to tie things up a 1-1.  Anderson's 70th minute rebound goal off a header by Isaiah Basemen put Lynden up for good.

Smiley and the Lions face a tough test next, when they play the top seed in Bellingham. "Number one in the state, that's what they are," said Smiley. "We've got to be perfect, that's really what it's got to be."

The Lynden/Bellingham match is Saturday at 11am at Civic Stadium.
