WWU Hoops Adds Anacortes Star Gabby Ronngren

May 7, 2019

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University women’s basketball head coach Carmen Dolfo has announced that forward Gabby Ronngren out of Anacortes High School has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Vikings beginning in 2019-20.

Ronngren was named the Skagit Valley Herald Player of the Year during her senior season in 2018-19, averaging 21.3 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. The 6-foot forward was also named the Northwest Conference MVP leading Anacortes to a 17-9 record and a berth in the state tournament.

“We are thrilled to have Gabby join our program, both for her basketball skills and her character,” said Dolfo. “She is a very versatile and strong player that will be a great fit to our basketball family.”

During her prep career she was a three-time All-Northwest Conference first-team selection. During her senior season in the postseason, she recorded five consecutive games with 20-or-more points. Following her junior season, Ronngren earned MVP honors at the All-Star East-West Game, scoring 17 points.

After scoring 555 points during her senior season, Ronngren upper her career total to 1,283 to place her 8th on the career scoring list for Skagit County.

Ronngren also played soccer during her prep career at Anacortes, earning All-Northwest Conference honors.

Gabby's parents are Teresa and Jon Ronngren of Anacortes.

Ronngren is the second piece of WWU’s recruiting class that will debut on the court in 2019-20, with Carley Zaragoza out of Union Mine High School in El Dorado, California previously signing Vikings. Zaragoza, a 6-2 post player, helped Union Mine win its third consecutive Sierra Valley Conference title during her senior season. She averaged 18.8 points and 12.1 rebounds per game in 2018-19.

The Vikings return all but one player from the 2018-19 squad that finished 17-13 overall and advanced to the semifinal round of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships. The 2019-20 season is scheduled to begin Nov. 8-9 with the West Region Crossover Classic hosted by Humboldt State in Arcata, California.
