Prep Football Week 8: 1st Place Showdowns

October 19, 2018

Three first place showdowns highlight week 8 of the prep football season in Whatcom County. 5 local teams will battle for either a divisional championship or sole possession of first place on Friday.

#10 Meridian (5-2/3-1 NWC) visits #6 Mount Baker (5-2/3-1NWC) in a match-up of two squads tied for first place in the 1A ranks of the Northwest Conference. You can hear the game on The Doug Lange Network beginning at 6:45pm.

The Mountaineers beat the Trojans 41-20 in the first match-up on September 28th.

They pounded us last time, they're probably going to pound us worse this time., but we'll show up and play, said Meridian coach Bob Ames

"Turnovers will play a role, we both had some turnovers that last game that led to some scores, said Mount Baker coach Ron Lepper. "So you just don't want to give opportunities away, you want to make them earn it."

In the 2A Bellingham (5-2/4-0NWC)  and Sehome (4-3/3-1NWC) clash at Civic Stadium at 7pm. The Red Raiders can win the Lake Division of the NWC outright with a victory. The Mariners needs a win and a Mountlake Terrace (4-3/3-1NWC) loss at Cedarcrest. A Sehome win coupled with a Mountlake Terrace win would leave all three squads tied for first.

In the 3A Squalicum hits the road chasing after a Wesco North championship. Riding a 4-game winning streak, the Storm (6-1/4-1Wesco) face Oak Harbor (6-1/4-1Wesco) at 7pm. The winner takes the crown and the number 1 seed in the week 9 crossover games versus the Wesco 3A South.
