Prep Football Week 6: Rivalry Previews

October 5, 2018

Week 6 of the prep football season features top rivalry games in the 1A and 2A classifications of the Northwest Conference as well as the 3A Wesco North.  Meridian visits Lynden Christian, Lynden host Burlington and Squalicum and Ferndale square off.

Our game of the week features a showdown between the top two teams in the Sky Division of the 2A ranks. Coverage Lynden hosting Burlington on The Doug Lange Network begins at 6:45pm. Listen online here

The 3rd ranked Lions (5-0) are looking to stay perfect after posting a 31-14 road win over Lakewood last week. The Tigers (2-3) posted their biggest win of the season in week 5 with a 21-0 shutout of Sedro-Woolley.

"They really want to run the ball," said Lynden coach Blake Van Dalen. "They will set up their play action pass by running the ball. They will call some quick passes, but really they either want to pound it out between the tackles or stretch you out."

No. 4 Lynden Christian (5-0) is also looking to stay undefeated.  It won't be easy as the Lyncs square off with last year's league champs and 1a state runner-up Meridian (3-2) at 7pm. The Lyncs beat Nooksack Valley 38-19 last week despite losing starting QB Trajan Schouten to an injury in the second quarter. Bryce Bouwman did a great job stepping in, completing 8-of-12 passes for 93 yards and 2 touchdowns

So who will get the start Friday?

"We feel good about Bryce going into it. Trajan will be a game time decision, right now he's trying to recover from his injury, " said LC head man Dan Kaemingk.  "If it ends up being Bryce we feel great about it and if Trajan is available, he'll get a look too."

The Trojans swept both games versus the Lyncs last year. Meridian coach Bob Ames is impressed with what he has seen out of Lynden Christian this year.

"They're really big up front, they'll go 230 at both tackles and a defensive end at about 240. They are good sized and they're playing really well," said Ames.

In the Wesco 3A North it's Ferndale hosting Squalicum at Golden Eagle Stadium. The Storm (4-1) rolled past Meadowdale 45-to-7 last week racking up 438 rushing yards.

Ferndale thumped the Storm 48-0 last year so there has to be plenty of motivation for Friday's physical showdown.

"We know what we're getting this week. These guys are gonna come out throwing haymakers with a big 'ole 230 pound fullback and you better believe you're going to get him running down hill," said Squalicum coach Nick Lucey

Ferndale (1-4) fell 28-13 to league leader Oak Harbor in Week 5. Despite the loss, Ferndale coach Jamie Plenkovich said it was the most complete 4 quarter performance for the Golden Eagles this year.

"They (Squalicum) have some great size up front, so offensively they're a challenge because they will give you a bunch of different looks, said Plenkovich. "If we're not disciplined and looking at the things we're supposed to, they will definetly rip off some plays and they have some guys that are very capable of doing that.'
