November 6, 2018

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University senior Nick Sparling has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week.

Sparling (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman/Ohio State) earned the weekly honor after tying for 5th place at last week’s Dennis Rose Invitational played at Waikoloa Kings' Course in Waikoloa, Hawai'i. Sparling completed the 54-hole, three-day tournament at 2-under-par 214 with consistent rounds of 70-72-72.

The senior ended his fall season with five consecutive rounds of par or better, and leads the No. 8 nationally-ranked Vikings with a scoring average of 71.93 (+0.14 to par) and with 9 rounds (out of 14) at par or better.

In addition to leading the team in scoring average, Sparling recorded four top 10 finishes and completed all of his five tournament starts in the top 15. The senior is WWU’s highest ranked player in the Golfstat.com player rankings at No. 27 in NCAA Division II.

During the five-tournament fall season, Western recorded three wins, one runner-up finish and placed 7th out of 26 teams in the West Regional Preview. WWU was ranked No. 8 in the Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll and is at No. 4 in the Golfstat.com Relative Team Rankings (as of 10/30).

The GNAC Golfer of the Week honor was the first in Sparling’s two-year WWU career, becoming the third Viking to earn the weekly award this season. The Vikings took home four of the six GNAC Golfer of the Week awards during the fall season, with senior Cody Roth (Sept. 17-23 & Sept. 24-30) and freshman Jordan Lee (Oct. 8-14) also being selected.
