Prep Football: Saturday Playoff Six Pack

November 10, 2018

Six Whatcom County football squads hit the gridiron today facing a  "win or go home" scenario. Five of those squads are looking to advance in the state playoffs, one is trying to get there.

Our game on the Doug Lange Network is the longest travel game of the bunch. Squalicum (8-2) plays No. 4 Mountain View in Vancouver at 6:00pm

The Storm are  coming off a 53-13 thrashing of Central Kitsap in district tournament play last Saturday. They racked up 572 yards on the ground and tallied 7 rushing touchdowns in the win. Spencer Lloyd got into the end zone 3 times, Devante Powell twice and it was 1 trip each each for Ben Schlenbaker and Steven Owens.

Mountain View out of the Greater Saint Helens League is led by a head coach with Whatcom County ties. Adam Mathieson was the head coach for Ferndale in 2003 and a former Athletic Director at Meridian. He was also a player and later an assistant coach at Western Washington University.

The Thunder have won 9 straight after losing their opener to undefeated and #1 Union out of the 4A ranks. They thrashed Ballard 49-6 last week. Jack Mertens had 126 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

"They look fast," said Storm coach Nick Lucey. "They all run well, including their quarterback and then they throw it around well. So they will challenge by run and pass."

Squalicum is back in the state playoffs after missing out last year. They were knocked out by Bonney Lake is the first round back in 2016. Mountain View has been sent home the last two years by Peninsula in the round of 16.

You can hear the Storm vs. the Thunder Saturday right here beginning at 5:45pm. The winner will take on Rainier Beach or Lincoln in the quarterfinals.

After an opening round bye, the Blackhawks are playing in the Quad-District playoffs. A victory would send them off to the 1B State quarterfinals and a match-up determined by the reseeding committee. All the other games are the opening round of the state playoffs.
