WWU Men's Golf : Brody Bonfilio Moves Up Leaderboard in NCAA Regional

AMARILLO, Texas – The Western Washington University men’s golf team was unable to climb the leaderboard during the second round of the 2018 NCAA Division II Championships West/South Central Regional played Tuesday on the La Paloma Course at Tascosa Golf Club.
 

Through the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament, the Vikings are in 20th place in the 20-team field. WWU made a 14-shot improvement from Monday’s first round, turning in a team score of 18-over-par 302 on Tuesday. Through the first two rounds the Vikings are 50-over-par (618). 
 

Freshman Brody Bonfilio (Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) continues to lead the Vikings as he moved up 15 spots on the leaderboard with his even-par 71 in the second round. Bonfilio is tied for 34th place in the 108-player field at 5-over-par 147. He was 2-under-par through the first 10 holes of his round on Tuesday, and finished with 2 bogeys over the final 8 holes to record the even-par round.

Junior Cody Roth (Bellingham, WA) slipped to a tie for 80th with a 6-over-par 77 on Tuesday, following his 5-over-par 76 in the first round. Through the first 36 holes Roth is at +11 (153). 
 

Senior Adam Barker (Gig Harbor, WA/Peninsula/Olympic College) is tied for 101st (+16), senior Willy Scholten (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) is tied for 103rd (+18) and sophomore Ethan Casto (Snohomish, WA) is 106th (+22). 

California Baptist moved into the team lead with a 6-under-par 278 in the second round, holding a one stroke advantage over St. Mary’s (TX) at 2-over-par for the tournament. Chico State and Colorado Christian are tied for 3rd place at 9-over-par, while Holy Names, Sonoma State and Colorado-Colorado Springs are tied for 5th at 13-over-par. The top 5 teams in the team standings at the conclusion of the regional will move on to the NCAA Championships Finals beginning May 21 in Muscle Shoals, Alabama at The Shoals Golf Club – Fighting Joe Course.

Cameron Brown of Oklahoma Christian and Kyle McLay of Holy Names are tied for individual medalist honors at 4-under-par.

Eric Valenzuela of St. Mary’s led five players shooting in the 60s in the first round, carding a 5-under-par 66 to hold a one stroke lead over Oklahoma Christian’s Cameron Brown (-4, 67).

Wednesday’s third round is scheduled to start at 7:30 am, with the Vikings teeing off in the first wave starting on the No. 1 tee. The final round of the tournament can be followed via the Live Leaderboard at Golfstat.com.
