WWU's Anna Schwecke Named GNAC Player
of the Week

December 3, 2018

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University junior center Anna Schwecke has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, for games played Nov. 26-Dec. 2.

Schwecke (Evergreen, CO/Clear Creek/Colorado-Colorado Springs) is the second Viking player to earn the honor this season, joining her post teammate Kelsey Rogers who won the award for games of Nov. 12-18. This marks the second GNAC Player of the Week honor for Schwecke, who also earned the award Dec. 18-24, 2017.

Schwecke helped lead the Vikings to a pair of wins to open the GNAC season, 70-62 on the road vs. Simon Fraser and 63-57 vs. Montana State Billings. The junior center scored 44 points and recorded 27 rebounds in the two wins, averaging 22.0 points and 13.5 rebounds per game.

Against Simon Fraser in the conference-opening road victory on Tuesday, Schwecke was 11-for-16 from the floor in her 24-point, 12-rebound double-double.

On Saturday in the GNAC home opener, Schwecke added a 20-point, 15-rebound double-double while connecting on 7-of-16 shots from the field and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Combined in the two games Schwecke was 18-for-32 (56.3%) from the field while helping extend the Vikings winning streak to five consecutive games.

WWU is 6-2 overall on the season and joins Northwest Nazarene (8-0, 2-0) and Seattle Pacific (3-4, 2-0) as teams off to a perfect start in conference play.

The Vikings will take the next week weeks off for final exams, returning to action for the 2018 Viking Holiday Hoops Classic that will feature four games played on Monday, Dec. 17 through Tuesday, Dec. 18 in Carver Gym. WWU hosts nationally ranked Lubbock Christian, Stanislaus State and Simon Fraser to the tournament. WWU will play Lubbock Christian in the 7:30 pm game on Dec. 17, with Simon Fraser and Stanislaus State tipping off at 5 pm to open the tournament.
