Prep Baseball: 2A success, 1A mixed results for local teams in district playoffs

May 6, 2018

Five Whatcom County prep baseball teams were in action Saturday in the district playoff. While none saw their season come to an end, no team ecured a sport in the state tournament by advancing to the regional round.

In the 2A ranks both Lynden and Sehome posted victories in Anacortes. With the wins, the Lions and Mariners advance to the district semifinals.

Lynden beat Mountlake Terrace 2-1 in extra innings.  James Marsh got the walk-off game-winning RBI single in the 8th. The Lions will play Burlington Tuesday at Volunteer Field in Anacortes at 6:00pm with the winner claiming a state berth.

Sehome knocked off Archbishop Murphy 7-5 to move on to a winner-to-state semifinal. The Mariners will play top-seed Anacortes Tuesday at Daniels Field in Anacortes at 6:00pm.

In 1A bi-district tournament play at Joe Martin Field and Sehome high School, Meridian, Lynden Christian and Nooksack Valley all fell short of advancing to the state regional round. Each team spilt a pair of games and are left to battle it out in the consolation bracket for one final spot in 1A state out of the district.

In games heard on the Doug Lange Network both Lynden Christian and Meridian lost in the semifinals.

Cedar Park Christian scored 3 runs in the top of the 7th inning to upend the Lyncs 6-to-5. LC scored one run in the bottom of the 7th and had the bases loaded before the Eagles secured the final out. Lynden Christian beat Overlake/Bear Creek 3-1 in their district opener.

University Prep used a 5-run, 4th inning to knock off Meridian 6-4 in the semifinals. The Trojans won their opener 10-0 over Kings in 6 innings. Meridian's Simon Burkett pitched a complete game with 8 strikeouts in the victory.

Nooksack Valley lost their tournament opener to Cedar Park Christian 4-3 , walking in the winning run in the bottom of the 7th. The Pioneers bounced back in their second game, blanking Overtake/Bear Creek 2-0 in a loser-out contest.

Meridian and Nooksack Valley will square off Saturday, May 12th at Joe Martin Field at 12:30pm in the loser-out consolation bracket. Lynden Christian will play South Whidbey at Sehome High School also at 12:30pm. The winners are scheduled to play for third place and a trip to state at 2:30pm at Sehome High School.
