Leighton & Fox Help Ferndale Get First Win

September 15, 2018

The Ferndale football squad started and finished strong at home Friday to get their first win of the season. The Golden Eagles beat Marysville-Getchell 28-16 in their WESCO 3A North opener.

Ferndale got rushing touchdowns from Brian Ebe and Gader Fox  in the first half to take a 14-0 halftime lead. A 3rd quarter comeback pulled the Chargers to within one point at 14-13, but the Golden Eagles responded big in the final frame. Watiko Leighton scored on a 19-yard pass from Sequoyah Julius and Ebe capped off the victory with a 4-yard run into the end zone.

Ferndale amassed 299 yards in total offense with Ebe rushing for 140 yards on 20 carries and Fox carrying the ball 26 times for 137 yards.

Leighton added a big 4th quarter interception to set-up Ebe's second score and broke up three passing attempts in the second half.

Listen to Fox & Leighton on the Doug Lange Network postgame show:

Marysville-Getchell starting QB Caleb Koellmer ran for a touchdown early in the 3rd quarter, but had to sit out most of the second-half following a hard hit. Austin Byron added a 4-yard fumble recovery for a TD and kicker Cameron Hazelwood connected on a 26 yard field goal to round out the scoring for the Chargers.

"Give our guys credit, we've had a rough couple of weeks to start out and really liked our gut-check here," said Ferndale coach Jamie Plenkovich. "Especially in the second half when we made things a little difficult  on ourselves."

Both teams are now 1-and-2 on the year. Ferndale visits Arlington Friday, September 21st. Marysville-Getchell plays Squalicum Saturday, September, 22nd at Civic Stadium.
