WWU Golf: Viking men 4th after first day of SoCal Intercollegiate

SANTEE, Calif. – The Western Washington University men’s golf team is in 4th place after the first two rounds of the 68th SoCal Intercollegiate played Monday at Carlton Oaks Golf Club.

The Vikings completed the first 36 holes at 17-over-par 593, just 3 strokes back of 3rd-place and 5 back of 2nd-place Dixie State. Dominican leads the 11-team field at 4-over-par 580. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is hosted by the University of California San Diego.

Junior Michael Butler (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) leads the Vikings six-member contingent tied for 4thplace in the 60-player field at 1-over-par 145. Butler fired a 1-under-par 71 in the opening round and finished the day with a 2-over-par 74 in the afternoon. 

Sophomore Ethan Casto (Snohomish, WA) is tied for 18th at 5-over-par 149, and senior Willy Scholten (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) and junior Cody Roth (Bellingham, WA) are also in the top 25 tying for 20th at 6-over-par 150. Scholten, playing as an individual in the tournament, carded WWU’s low round of the day with a 2-under-par 70 in the first round.

Dominican’s Ty Macias holds a 7-stroke lead for individual medalist honors at 7-under-par 137, carding rounds of 71 and 66 on Monday.

The Vikings will start Tuesday’s final round with tee times starting at 8:20 am, and Scholten at 9 am, all off the first tee.
