2A District Baseball: Lynden Stays Alive, Sehome Falls

May 8, 2019

Lynden baseball exploded for a four-run 5th inning to knock off Blaine Tuesday in Anancortes and keep their state playoff hopes alive. The Lions downed the Borderites 4-2 at Daniels Field to advance to a winner to state/loser out match-up with Anancortes on Saturday.

Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the 5th, Lynden turned 2 base on balls, an error and 2 hits into 4-runs. James Marsh knocked in the typing and go-ahead runs with 1 out. He would come in to score two batters later on a suicide squeeze bunt by Carter Parcher.

Lynden got a stelar performance on the mound from Tanner Hope. The junior worked 5 innings giving up 2 runs on just 2 hits, while striking out 5 batters.

Lynden coach Cory White says Hope has been doing it all year for the Lions.

"He's a crafty pitcher. mixes speeds really well, but controls the zone really good. He just did a great job today," said White.

Dylan Parcels closed out the final two innings for Lynden. The senior registered his lone strikeout in the 7th inning to end the game.

Lynden totaled just three hits, but drew 6 walks versus the three Blaine pitchers in Colby Knutzen, Tyler Haggith and Tobin Akyre. Marsh finished the night going 1-for-2 with a walk, 2RBI's and 1 run scored. Carter Parcher added a double and an RBI in the win.

Nick Gunderson did the most damage for the Borderites, going 1-for-3 with a walk and 1 RBI. Akyre added the other hit and Hudson Reid had an RBI. Blaine ends the year with a record of 12-and-10.

Saturday's match-up between Lynden and Anacortes is the second meeting of the year between the two schools. The Lions won the regular season contest 6-to-4 on April 17th.

"Their kids are believing right now," said White. "They're a good solid bunch, so we've got our hands full, but we have to go in believing that we played them and  can do a great job as well too."

After trailing early, Archbishop Murphy rallied for a 6-3 victory over Sehome in 2A semifinal action at Daniels Field. The win earns the Wildcats and state berth and sends them on to the district championship game versus Liberty. Sehome falls into the consolation bracket with a winner to state/loser out game Saturday versus Sedro-Woolley.

Archbishop Murphy responded in the bottom of the second scoring 3 runs on 4 hits, an error, a sacrifice fly, a hit batter and 1 stolen base. The Wildcats added single runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings to ice the victory.

Brandon King paced Archbishop Murphy at the plate going 2-for-3 with a homerun, an RBI and 2 runs scored. Jo Jo Ennis added 2 singles with an RBI and 1 run scored.
