WWU's Halsell Named GNAC Men's Track & Field Coach

of the Year

May 31, 2019

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University Track & Field and Cross Country head coach Pee Wee Halsell has been selected as the 2019 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Men’s Coach of the Year.

Halsell swept the GNAC Track & Field Coach of the Year honors on the men’s side in 2019, also earning Indoor Men’s Coach of the Year honors.

This marks the 18th GNAC Coach of the Year award in Halsell’s career that has spanned 32 years. He has been awarded the Outdoor Coach of the Year honor eight times (7 men, 1 women), five indoor awards and five cross country awards (4 men, 1 women). Halsell has now won 35 Coach of the Year awards at the conference and regional level since taking over the WWU program in 1987.

Halsell also earned the Men’s GNAC Coach of the Year honor for the outdoor season in 2005, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Each time the Vikings won the men’s outdoor title, including the 2019 team championship. WWU leads all GNAC schools with seven outdoor track & field championships.

After winning the program’s fifth indoor title in February, the Vikings dominated the outdoor championships scoring 173.0 points for a 51-point margin of victory over second-place Central Washington. WWU was led by individual titles by junior Cordell Cummings in the 110m and 400m Hurdles and sophomore Seren Dances in the high jump. The Vikings also won the 4x400 Relay and had 15 total All-GNAC awards.

WWU had three men qualify for the NCAA Championships that were held last weekend in Kingsville, Texas, with Cummings (400m Hurdles), freshman Karlington Anunagba (100m) and senior Alex Barry (Javelin) going up against the nation’s best.

The strong season by the WWU Track & Field program also included the men’s and women’s cross country teams qualifying for the NCAA II National Championships and four Second Team All-America honors at the NCAA Division II Indoor and Outdoor Championships.

Halsell is assisted by Ben Stensland, Eric Dudley, Bill Roe, Juan Castillo, Karis Carter and Damien Fisher.
